Personal Injury Protection
For many people today, a personal injury protection policy has become
something they consider necessary when driving in their everyday lives. This
should not be considered a selfish act as there are other people to think
about if you are gifted wit a family that will need financial support. While
some people take out personal injury protection (PIP) just for their own
benefit, most health insurance policies can incorporate this as an add-on.
With the growing number of insurance plans on the market, all of which sound
necessary, each family has to weigh up the benefits against the additional
financial strain that can be imposed by adding it.
The situation can be made worse when the policy has not been researched
carefully and does not insure everything it was intended to. Most US states
have already passed laws to ensure people have personal injury and other
forms of insurance although the amount of cover is not consistent. In Alaska
for example a car driver will require ten times the amount of coverage that
a driver in Florida will need. While there are a few states left that do not
require personal injury protection by law yet, it is only a matter of time
but that does not mean you cannot have this peace of mind right now.
The cover will pay around 80 percent (depending on the plan) of the costs of
the insured and passengers. These ‘no fault' plans cover almost every
conceivable bill, even if the accident was the fault of the policy holder!
As there can be considerable costs involved with purchasing this type of
cover it is worth looking carefully at any current insurance policies you
have to see if any of those areas are already catered for; which could lower
the amount of protection cover you would need if you took out a new plan. It
could be that the cost of lost wages and medical bills may be recovered
through an existing health insurance policy.
Depending on the plan, you may not require any additional cover or only
minimal in the worst case scenario. Drivers that have more than their fair
share of accidents are more likely to require personal injury protection
even though it may cost them more. Fortunately most drivers will probably
find themselves covered by their own health insurance policy which will also
protect family members that happen to be passengers. Personal injury
protection will still be required if you find that other passengers are not
covered or the level of cover is so low it is almost a waste of time.
It is not unfair to assume that any person traveling in your vehicle should
be the responsibility of the driver and insured individual. If you live in a
state that does not have mandatory personal injury protection you may want
to add this into your portfolio. This is one area where age and driving
experience can be on the driver's side and insurance policy costs can be
lowered. Younger, less experienced drivers often have to pay considerably
more owing to their inexperience and probable meager health insurance cover
but need to start looking to the future for themselves and their family by
taking out as much insurance as they can afford.
